Why We Manufacture High-Purity Silicone Hoses

Posted by Flex Technologies on 16th Aug 2016

In our last blog post, we talked about the great attention to detail that must be placed in the manufacturing of food products, drink products, cosmetics, and other topical products. In an environment full of machinery, robots, and moving parts, it might seem counter-intuitive to envision an ultra-clean, completely bacteria-free environment, but it’s possible thanks to high-purity silicone hoses that coat all the surfaces through which the ingestibles or topicals must pass, and manufacturing processes that fabricate all these tubes in a cleanroom environment.

So why do we do what do and go to such great lengths to ensure that our silicone tubing is free of bacteria, dust, and other contaminants (such as skin flakes, oils, perspiration, lint, and hair)?

Partly, we do this because it’s the law. All equipment that manufactures anything you are going to put into your mouth or onto your skin is required by law to be equipped with FDA-approved food-grade hoses. While it might be easy to fuss at the FDA and look at this as an overboard requirement, we’re thankful that we live in America, where standards keep food-borne illnesses to a minimum through such stringent requirements.

Ultimately, though, we don’t do it just because we have to. The real reason is for your safety and ours. Every time we eat, apply skin creams, drink a soda, or encounter any of the myriad ingestibles and topicals that are available to us, we could be putting ourselves at risk if these products were unintentionally infiltrated with unwanted contaminants. We don’t want these things to get into the food supply any more than you do!

So when we don our cleanroom suits to go create translucent silicone tubing, we are doing so with the firm realization that it’s not just to check one of Uncle Sam’s checkboxes. It’s for the safety of you, us, and our loved ones.
